World Press Freedom Day marked today

The World Press Freedom Day has been celebrated since 1992 upon the initiative of the representatives of the African countries' independent press with the support of UNESCO.

On May 3, 1991 the journalists of Africa adopted the so-called "Declaration of Windhoek". The document urged the world governments to guarantee freedom and the democratic character of the press. It was also underlined in the declaration that the key element of any democratic society is the free, pluralist and independent media.
