Death sentence for German citizen in Belarus comes into force

The death sentence handed down to German citizen Rico Krieger in Belarus has come into force. He did not appeal, reports sb.by.

It emerged recently that the foreigner was sentenced to death in the Republic of Belarus in June. Krieger was charged under six articles of the Criminal Code: "act of terrorism," "agent activity," "mercenarism," "creation of or participation in an extremist formation," "illegal actions in connection with firearms, ammunition and explosives," and "intentional damage to a vehicle or means of communication."

Rico Krieger arrived in Belarus on October 2, 2023, and by October 6, he was already behind bars. He is accused of planting explosives seized from a cache in Minsk at the Aziaryshcha railway station, which is used for loading and unloading military equipment. The explosion occurred late on October 5. There were no casualties and the damage was minor.

The German Foreign Ministry said it was investigating the case of Rico Krieger. It is possible that he could be exchanged.
