EU suspends sanctions against Belarus minister Makei

The decision has been published in the Official Journal of the European Union today.

The decision may be renewed or amended if the Council deems that its objectives have not been met.

Council of the European Union suspended the visa sanctions imposed on Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Uladzimir Makei on Monday. However, he has not been removed from the black list: the financial sanctions are still in power.

European officials have explained the decision by the necessity to simplify diplomatic contacts between the EU and Belarus.

EU sanctions were imposed on Makei after the brutal dispersion of the Dec.19, 2010 protest action. He was the head of the President’s Administration back then.
