Economist: Belarusians to buy expensive goods in Russia

Our country is going to increase the value added tax by 2% in 2015.

The VAT is much lower in the other Customs Union states. It totals 18% in Russia and 12% – in Kazakhstan.

Producers of non-essential goods will feel it, the expert thinks.

Balykin: "Belarusians are unlikely to go to Russia or Kazakhstan to buy bread and milk. These goods are not expensive. They won’t buy clothes and footwear there either. However, it will be better to buy a new car in the Russian Federation than in the Republic of Belarus. That is why I think that people will make such purchases abroad.”
