14:37 Belarus intends to become member of UN Human Rights Council

Belarus announced its intention to become a member of the UN Human Rights Council. The elections of members will take place in the middle of May 2007. Only Slovenia is eager to take the same place at the moment but the list of interested countries is going to be enlarged.
The places are distributed according to the existing quotas for every region. There are 6 places allocated for Eastern Europe in the Council.

According to the existing requirements, members of the Council are to stick to the high standards of human rights protection. A decision of two thirds of members of the General Assembly may lead to an exclusion of a Council member if the country is accused of systematic and mass human rights violation.

Eastern Europe is represented by Poland, Czechia, Rumania, Montenegro, Russia and Ukraine at the moment, reports telegraf.by.
