Banks block cell phones for unsettled debt

Belarusian banks increase the interest rate if the debt is unsettled.

“Double interest rate will be added for every day of delay," explained "Belagroprombank" to Euroradio.

The punishment may be made even more severe as of March.

“We can complain to the court and confiscate driving licenses, block cell phones and restrict the ability to leave the state," said "Belinvetsbank" to Euroradio.

Depriving of driving licenses is a rare measure, law enforcement officers from Minsk courts told Euroradio.

The ability to travel abroad is restricted more often. Cell phones are also blocked frequently. The money from people's accounts is sent to the bank in such cases.

Independent lawyer Alyaksei Berasneu thinks that the measure is too strict for ordinary people.

“It may be okay for  incorrigible defaulters but not for ordinary people."
