Belarus ambassador refuses to unveil Kupala's monument in Gdansk

Belarus Ambassador in Poland Pavel Latushka refused in a surprise move to take part in the unveiling ceremony of the Janka Kupala's monument in Gdansk on Saturday. Possibly, the diplomat thus reacted to the refusal of the city's authorities to cross out Kupala's "Profet" verse from the ceremony agenda. The local newspaper Gazeta wrote that a Belarus diplomat approached the city's magistrate over this verse, which reads: “Stand up, slaves and leave behind your eternal sleep...". The wording still sounds acute for the contemporary Belarus. But Gdansk refused to cross out this verse from their program. The song with the lyrics from the poem will be played during the ceremony

The monument is located at the crossings of Kupala street. It is to be unveiled to mark the 125th birthday anniversary of the great Belarusian poet. The monument was funded by the Belarusian diaspora in Gdansk, reports Charter'97.
