Winter Olympics start in Vancouver, Wayne Gretzky lights the Olympic torch

The Olympic torch was lit by four famous sportsmen including a legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky.


A tragedy occurred several hours before – a Georgian luge slider Nodar Kumaritashvili died after crashing on the last turn of the luge course. He lost control of his luge that collided with the track’s wall and hit his head on a metal pole. Kumaritashvili died in hospital. Georgia national team has decided to continue participation in the Olympic Games.

About 2.5 thousand sportsmen from 82 countries of the world took part in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games that was dedicated to the deceased Georgian athlete.

Let us remind you that the Olympic Games in Vancouver will last for 17 days. 86 sets of medals will be awarded in 15 kinds of sport. Belarusian sportsmen will perform in six kinds of sport: biathlon, freestyle skiing, cross-country skiing, speed skating and hockey.
