Thousand people demand to rename Suvorov Military School in Minsk

Members of BNF and its youth affiliate have gathered more than a thousand signatures of people demanding to rename the Suvorov Military School in Minsk.
The appeal to the Prime Minister Syarhei Sidorski and the Minister of Defense Leanid Maltsau suggests that the school should be renamed in honour of a state and military figure of the Great Duchy of Lithuania Kantsantsin Astrozhski (1460 - 1530).

Hetman Astrozhski won in 63 battles against our country’s enemies including the battle near Orsha in 1524. It is said in the appeal that “Suvorov is an occupant for our nation; he severely suppressed all uprisings of the Belarusian people”.

The initiators of the action think that commemoration of Suvorov is “humiliation of the Belarusian nation, scorn of the memory of our ancestors”.

The collection of signatures continues in Minsk, Brest and Hrodna. At the end of the campaign the signatures will be sent not only to Sidorski and Maltsau but to the school’s principal too.
