Sadouski: No definite assessment for PACE decision
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has returned a special-guest status to Belarus, 12 years after it was lost after the constitutional referendum initiated by Alexander Lukashenka. On June 23 during PACE session, a total of 159 members voted in favor of returning the special-guest status to Belarus. 2 people voted against and 2 abstained. The moratorium for death penalty was described as a condition for the return of the special-guest status.
Commenting on the decision to Euroradio, Piotr Sadouski, the first ambassador of Belarus in Germany, noted it is difficult to give a definite assessment. He said:
Formally, this is a step forward. But Europe is not consistent enough and Lukashenka's regime gets strenghtened, then this is a step backward.
The former diplomat also noted that the political weight of the Council of Europe is insignificant.
