Residents in Pinsk test positive for radionuclides

Radionuclides were found in 100 percent of the checked residents of Pinsk and the Pinsk district, Ivan Nikitchanka, a fellow member of the National Academy of Sciences, said in a statement.  The checks were carried out in the framework of a civil project designed to raise public awareness about the radioactive protection in the Pinsk district. Professor Nikitchanka is the coordinator of the project which has been implemented with the support of the government since April 1, 2008, reports Belapan.

Nikitchanka said that radionuclides were found in 34 randomly picked residents of Pinsk and nearby villages. These people complain about chronic diseases.

Similar results were obtained recently in the Valozhyn district (Minsk region), Lelchytsy district (Homel region), Minsk district and the capital city of Minsk. Ivan Nikitchanka says there is still a danger of radioactive contamination of human bodies through foodstuffs in Belarus.
