U.S. expert warns Dalia Grybauskaitė from attempts to "tame" Lukashenka
President of the Project on Transitional Democracies, former officer of the U.S. military investigation Bruce Jackson has said this.
He has said in an
interview to delfi.lt that nobody has been able to tame the leader of Belarus. Jackson
called Dalia
Grybauskaitė’s attempts to establish contacts with Lukashenka a repetition of the others’
mistakes: "The Latvians tried, the
Swedes tried - no one succeeded. Now Lukashenka is in a kind of exile again,
cut off from Europe. He is unlikely to be invited to the Eastern Partnership
summit."
Jackson
says that, "Lukashenka deceived or
betrayed everyone who tried to establish contact with him, and they came back
with nothing. Why fewer and fewer people want to go to this moral hazard, and
talk to a man who is, in fact, the European Hugo
Chavez. When there are countries that really want to carry out reforms that
really need help - Moldova, Georgia and others, I honestly do not understand,
why wasting time with someone who is not interested in anything that the EU can
offer. "
According
to Jackson, the leaders of Belarus's neighboring countries may not have a
choice when it comes to business, national minorities or diplomats. However,
poker with Lukashenka is not a game in which you can expect to win.
