76-year-old Jorge Mario Bergoglio elected as new Pope

Jorge Mario Bergoglio is an Argentinean with Italian roots. He has become the 226th Pope and the first Jesuit-Pontiff.

According to some information, Cardinal Bergoglio was the main rival of Cardinal Ratzinger, who became Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, at that conclave.

On Wednesday, the fourth voting took place at the cardinals' conclave (there was one more voting on Tuesday). At 21.06 Belarusian time, the white smoke appeared at the Sistine Chapel chimney and the bells rang. The Pope was elected!

This conclave has become the first conclave in the history of the Catholic Church which was summoned not after the Pope's death, but after his voluntary retirement.
