The statement was aimed to coincide with the 1-year anniversary since the sentence to ex-presidential candidate, Chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic party (Peoples' Assembly) Mikalaj Statkevich had been pronounced.
In the statement, according to BelaPAN, the German politician says: "While innocent people are kept in prisons, the European Union and Germany will keep the sanctions in force and possess the right to make them stricter".
Sigmar Gabriel notes that Statkevich is the only ex-candidate who is still imprisoned. He says that bravery of Statkevich and many other Belarusian citizens deserves respect and solidarity.
