Opposition wants EU to keep sanctions ahead of elections

Representatives of Belarusian pro-democracy forces held a meeting at the office of the Belarusian Popular Front. They discussed a common strategy and a joint plan of actions during the presidential campaign. Radio Liberty reports the list of participants also included those who had previously met in Vilnius: Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu, Syarhei Kalyakin, Alyaksei Yanukevich, Anatol Lyaukovich, a representative of the Belarusian Christian Democracy's organizing committee, a representative from the Green party as well as members of the committee to organize Labor Party and Women's Party (Nadzeya).

According to Anatol Lyabedzka, the participants agreed to develop a common position and to pass it in a written form as a joint decision of those who wish to work together during the presidenrtial campaign by August 12.

Lyabedzka also voiced a comment on EU's sanctions against Belarus. He said the opposition should  create a general message for Brussels that there are no grounds to lift sanctions. If sanctions are lifted oin October ahead of the presidential campaign, it will mean a defeat of pro-democracy forces in Belarus.
