Opposition: Single presidential candidate may be elected at congress

Five opposition parties and organizations on November 17 signed an agreement on the procedure to nominating a single candidate for the 2015 presidential elections. The list of signatories includes: Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), Movement for Freedom, civil campaign Speak the Truth!, Party of Belarusian Popular Front and the organizing committee of Belarusian Christian Democracy party. The statement was announced at a news conference in Minsk.

It is believed that preparations for the congress of pro-democracy forces will begin already this year. If the United Civil Party and Just World Party join the signatories any time soon, the single opposition candidate may be elected at the congress in late March 2015. Otherwise, the single candidate may be picked approximately in May 2015.

Andrei Dzmitryieu who represents Speak the Truth! campaign told reporters today there are two scenarios: nomination of a single candidate by the congress of pro-democracy forces or election boycott.
