New Life protestant church penalized with $100K fine

Minsk's Maskouski District Court on February 26 found the New Life protestant church guilty of damaging the environment (soil) and penalized the church with almost $100,000. Syarhei Lukanin, the lawyer of the church, said they would appeal the ruling. Commenting on the situation to Euroradio, he said the church had no intention to pay this excessive fine. He described the ruling as unfair and illegitimate.

The New Life is expected to issue a statement to the members of the public in order to explain their further moves.

In December 2009, the environment-protection unit at the Minsk City Hall detected traces of petrochemical products in the soil samples taken from the territory near the building of the church.
