Negotiations with IMF to resume next week
Negotiations between the Belarusian government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on a possible $2-billion stand by loan will resume next week. An IMF European Department deputy director arrives in Minsk on November 8. The Belarusian government requested the loan as a safety cushion in the face of a global financial crisis.
The IMF said that the crisis had a negative impact on Belarus' economy and its access to external financing. Prices of mineral fertilizers and petroleum products, Belarus' major export items, plunged on international markets.
