Kalyakin: Observers would count ballots if we did not participate in elections

The leaders of the United Pro-Democracy Forces (UDF) have evaluated the ongoing electoral campaign at a news conference in Minsk.  Vintsuk Vyachorka (Popular Front), Siarhei Kalyakin (Party of Communists) and Anatol Lyabedzka (United Civic Party) said at a joint press conference Saturday that this year's campaign destroyed the myth about the powerful authorities. UDF leaders believe that the government has displayed weakness by having not allowed the opposition into election commissions.

The united opposition leaders also said that no open and fair election took place in Belarus. This is also proved by the fact that the percentage of people who voted early is even higher than during the 2004 general elections, according to UDF leaders.

At the same time, Siarhei Kalyakin expressed an opinion that the opposition did not allow the authorities to create a beautiful election picture, because 70 opposition candidates remained in the race.

Talking about the reaction of the West to the results of the Belarus elections, UDF leaders noted that the relations between this country and the European Union do not depend on the recognition of the election. But Vintsuk Vyachorka said that the recognition would disable the Belarusian opposition to fight for a democratic and independent Belarus during the next elections.

Responding to a question about a street rally on September 28, the opposition leaders stated that the format of the action was not defined yet. However, they described as absurd the statement that MP candidates do not have a right to gather near the Central Elections Commission and wait for the results of the polls.
