Germany hopes for further democratic changes in Belarus

Further democratic reforms remain one of the terms of normalization of relations between Belarus and the EU and for a complete cancellation of sanctions. The German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier claimed it after a meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Syarhei Martynau on February 11. According to the press service of the German Ministry of Foreign Affaires, bilateral relations and relations between Belarus and the EU were the top issue on the agenda. The German Minister thinks that the new EU policy “Eastern partnership” presents new opportunities for Belarus. In his opinion, it is up to the Belarusian authorities to decide whether the country can make use of them.

This kind of visit of the Belarusian Foreign Minister is the first one over the last 14 years.  S.Martynau is also supposed to negotiate with the Prime Minister of the federal state of Brandenburg Matthias Platzeck. Martynau will also meet the administration of the Eastern Committee for German Economy and representatives of political and business circles of Germany.
