Former Belarus border guards to pay $3mn in compensatory damages for graft

The Ashmianski District Court has satisfied a lawsuit filed by a military prosecutor against 10 former Belarusian border guards, seeking compensation of material damage, reports Belapan.
The former border guards were earlier convicted by the Minsk Military Court of bribery and sentenced to various prison terms.

The Office of the Prosecutor General said that in April-June 2004, while on duty to guard the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, the soldiers took bribes from a Russian company whose trucks were not inspected when crossing the border. Since the Russian company did not pay customs duties, the state suffered huge material losses.

The former border guards will have to pay $2.8 million in compensatory damages to the Belarusian state.
