Belarus okays hazardous cargo on railroads

The Belarus Railways have no intention to refuse from transit of yellow phosphorous despite the recent accident in the Lviv region of Ukraine, Interfax quotes Uladzimir Zharalo, the director of the Belarus Railways, as saying. A total of 60 tanks with yellow phosphorous were transported on Belarus's railroads in the past six months of 2007, he said.

He also noted that "other more dangerous cargo was also in transit on the railroads of Belarus".

The railways chief stressed that conditions should be created in order to avoid derailment of hazardous carriages.

"Belarus already possesses procedures and technologies for the transportation of hazardous cargo. Taking into account the recent railway accident in the Lviv region, Belarus has introduced additional measures to ensure safety during the transportation of hazardous cargo," he said.
