Barscheuski: Democrats were defeated by society during polls

Lyavon Barscheuski, the chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front, Andrei Sannikov, the coordinator of the European Belarus campaign and Zmitser Dashkevich, the leader of Malady Front youth pressure group, on October 3 held a press conference in Minsk to share their views on the recent parliamentary elections. Lyavon Barscheuski also said the opposition forces were defeated by the society not the government.

Lyavon Barscheuski: "There are no and will not be a parliament in Belarus in the nearest years. The election camaign was a farce. This campaign proved the defeat of democratic forces by the society, not the government. The society saw it better than us that the House of Representatives is helpless and unecessary.

The chairman of the Belarusian Popular Front expressed view that in order to hold fair elections, one should fight for the changes in the electoral laws, e.g. to abolish the advance voting procedure.
