BAJ: Independent journalists not to be deprived of legal support

The BAJ Council decided to suspend the activities of the BAJ Centre for Legal Protection of Mass Media on March 30. The deputy chairperson of the BAJ Andrei Bastunets has informed ERB about it. Andrei Bastunets: “The Centre was not mentioned in the BAJ statute, there were no special notes. Taking into account the fact that changes may be added to the statute only during a congress, we have decided to suspend the Centre’s activities”.

However, it does not mean that members of the organization will be deprived of legal assistance. It will remain on the same conditions. However there will be no corresponding civil service like the Centre, they will receive help from the BAJ, says the lawyer.

Moreover, the Council has announced that members’ IDs have to be replaced.

Andrei Bastunets: “They have been announced invalid. The decision will be announced to the organization’s members in the website and with the help of mass media. Administrations and heads of affiliates will have to collect the old IDs”.

According to the chairperson, new IDs have already appeared and it is possible to receive them within the next few days.
