Authorities in Mahiliou stop unlawful construction at a historical site

Authorities in Mahiliou have shut down the construction of a memorial church at a local historical site that began in June.
The construction was taking place without an approval from archeologists. Part of the cultural soil layer was thus removed and taken to a dump, reports ERb correspondent Hanna Paliakova.

Historians had to complain to the Ministry of Culture. According to Igar Marzaliuk who runs the department of archeology at the local unversity, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Belarus recently replied saying that  it opened a criminal probe into the matter.

During the diggings at the removed cultural layer, archeologists recovered metal objects and pottery dated back to 12th-17th centuries and a 11th-century icon.
