Activists in Belarus fight for unregistered NGOs

The conference titled "192-1: The Current Situation and How to Overcome Consequenes" took place at the Human Rights House in Vilnius, Lithuania on May 29-30. The number in the conference title refers to the article in the Penal Code of Belarus that envisages criminal prosecution for acting on behalf of an unregistered public association.
The meeting, organized by the Assembly of Belarusian NGOs, addressed the issued associated with the criminal prosecution for taking part in unregistered organizations. Representatives of human rights groups and NGOs from Belarus and abroad, lawter took part in the event.

In the view of human rights defenders, the abolition of Article 193-1 in the Penal Code of Belarus is a principal condition for improving Belarus's human rights record. The participating organizations described this task as a priority in their activities and agreed to hold several consultations in order to process and implement the proposals filed by the conference participants.
