14:34 No talk yet for Ukraine's membership in EU

The European Union's Commissioner for External Affairs Benita Ferrero-Waldner has warned that talks started on Monday with Ukraine focus on building a new understanding of cooperation, not about the conditions for Ukraine's joining the European Union. Despite Poland's efforts, the mandate approved by the European Community in January does not talk about the possibility for Ukraine to join the European Union.

"I understand that the Ukrainian are longing for joining the European Union and this is their right, but we should remember about the actual policy of the European Union," Benita Ferrero-Waldner said and added that a deeper understanding with Ukraine is part of the Europe's neighborhood policy with Algeria, Morocco, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan.

"A new understanding will make Ukraine closer to the European Union in all possible fields, including a free-trade zone," the commissioner added.
