Vasil Suprun has died

The 82-year-old organizer and leader of the Belarusian youth anti-Soviet underground youth organization that existed in Western Belarus in1946-1947, poet, archaeologist and student of local lore Vasil Suprun has died in his house in Slonim this morning.
He created a Belarusian patriotic underground group that was to resist the Soviet regime in Slonim in 1946. It was called “Chaika”.

The organization was to resist the compulsory colonization and russianization of the country, to arouse people’s national identity and to protect Belarusian traditions, culture, language and relics.

The organization was growing as more and more students and intellectuals were joining it. Suprun was arrested in 1947.

He spent 9 years in labour camps and prisons and lived under surveillance afterwards. Vasil Suprun never managed to right himself.
