Uzbek president set for re-election

The presidential elections are taking place today in Central Asian republic of Uzbekistan. Over 16 million voters are expected to come to the polls.  The incumbent candidate Islam Karimov was nominated by the Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan.

He is contended by three more candidates: Aslidin Rustamov (People's Democratic Party), Dalyram Tashmukhamedov (Social Democratic Party) and Akmal Saidov (independent).

The winner is expected to get over 50 percent of the votes out of the total turnout numbers, reminds Interfax.

Ahead of the poll, riot police in Uzbekistan detained opposition members who protested against Karimov's participation in the elections.
