Unknown massacre site found near Homel

Soldiers are digging at the site that looks like the grave of a huge number of executed people near the southern Belarusian city of Homel. The military were tipped about the site by local residents. People were executed during the WWII, but it is yet to be determined whether they were soldiers or civilians. It is also unclear who -- the Nazi or the Stalin's secret police -- carried out the executions.

Forensic experts are yet to work on the remains, while the regional prosecutor's office is to decide whether to open a criminal case into this matter.

Meanwhile, local activists Andrej Melnikau and Kanstancin Zukouski who visited the site are expressing worries that if it is confirmed that the Stalin's secret police officers carried out the executions, the authorities are likely to put the blame on the Nazi anyway, reports Belapan.
