UN to discuss project of resolution about human rights violation in Belarus

The US delegation has prepared a project of a resolution about a systematic human rights violation in Belarus, oppression and prosecution of mass media, opposition and human rights defenders and presented it to the UN Assembly. Thus, the American delegation suggested that UN members should denounce the situation concerning human rights in Belarus, reports the official site of the UN. The document stresses that the Belarusian authorities did not react to the criticism of the international community concerning violations during the presidential election 2006 and have not fulfilled their obligations of organizing a free and fair election of municipal authorities in 2007.

The project of the resolution draws attention to the fact of deprivation of independent organizations of any opportunity to exist, oppression and detention of Belarusian journalists and temporary bans imposed on activities of independent mass media.

The document contains an appeal to the Belarusian government urging it to release all political prisoners and to stop persecution and other repressions of democratic political opponents, activists, human rights defenders and independent mass media.

The Belarusian representative in the UN Andrei Dapkyunas urged to withdraw the resolution having claimed that voting on projects of resolutions on countries was an attempt to cause a dissent among UN member states.
