Varburg colony's houses in Brest "preserved" for winter (photo)

Now the windows and the doors of the six houses which are still left are nailed up with planks and shields. Some Bresters think that the suspended demolition is connected with the recent (the beginning of December) visit of the delegation from the Israeli city Ashdod to Brest and the possible partnership between Brest and Ashdod. Like, there can't be a better place for the Israeli.

The department of culture of the Brest regional executive committee neither confirmed nor refuted this information. They called the fortification of windows and doors of the evicted houses a normally carried event. A committee's representative claimed that an official from Minsk had come there to check the situation.

Let us remind you, 12 two-storeyed houses were built for poor Jewish families in the 1st Minsk drive back in 1920s for the money of the international charity organization "Joint". The city block was named in honour of Chairman of "Joint" Felix Varburg. The Brest authorities decided to demolish the colony. They do not object to its existence but refer to the absense of money for reconstruction.
