USA and European Union consider imposing wider sanctions on Belarus

"Due to the deteriorating situation in Belarus and the imprisonment of ex-candidate Andrei Sannikau, we are discussing the possibility of imposing wider sanctions on this country with the EU”, - said Gordon at a meeting of the U.S. Senate dedicated to American priorities in Europe, informs Radio Liberty.

He added that Washington considered the trials connected with mass disorders in Belarus to be politically motivated and added that relations with the official Minsk could not improve “in the context of continued repression of civil society, the opposition, and independent media”.

"Both Europe and us would like to establish better and more productive relations with Belarus. Unfortunately, the country’s authorities are conducting a policy that is isolating Belarus and is people, - stressed the Assistant Secretary of State.
