Superstorm Sandy kills over 40 people in US, heading for Canada (photo)

Hurricane "Sandy" killed about 50 people, according to the information provided by the Fox News TV-channel. Millions of people were left without electricity and transport, many houses were flooded or destroyed, the BBC reports.

In New York, the record high waves - up to 4,2 m - flooded the tunnels and the metro. The U.S. President imposed a state of emergency in New York. During the hurricane, a transformation sub-station exploded, one hospital was evacuated, and 50 houses burnt in the capital of the state.

Also, the state of emergency was imposed in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, the District of Columbia and several other states.




The total number of "Sandy" victims, including the people killed in the Caribbeans, is more than 80.
