The protests started after the parliamentary election in December 2011, when the pro-authoritative party "United Russia" got about half of the votes. This party nominated Vladimir Putin as a candidate for President.

Representatives of the Russian opposition in Moscow gathered mass demonstrations for fair elections, the number of participants made several dozen thousand people.

Putin's adherents gathered in the main Moscow squares in the evening. The opposition promises to lead the people to the streets on March 5. Leader of the Liberal-Democratic party Vladimir Zhirinovski and leader of the party "Fair Russia" Sergey Mironov, who got the last places, admitted defeat and congratulated Putin on victory.
