Inesa Zubrylina, a teacher of English from Dzyatlava grammar school #1has confessed to Euroradio that her work and salary have not changed since her victory in the contest “Best teacher 2011”. She makes about two million roubles. Because she works double time.
Inesa Zubrylina: “I almost work double time. Moreover, I work with talented children and do some scientific research in the grammar school. I also work in the professional committee it is additional work. I have headed the club for 8 years. I do not get paid for it, however, it is also important. I am a teacher of higher category and I get about 2 millions. It is two millions with the bonuses”.

The teacher gets down to her PC when she comes home and start looking for materials for the next lesson on the Internet. She makes printouts for pupils for the next lesson because there are not enough textbooks.

Inesa Zubrylina: “We lack textbooks and they are not available for all the forms. I spend my time working on the PC every evening and make printouts for pupils myself. It is not cheap either”.

The teacher buys paper for the printouts herself too. However, 2 millions is quite a good salary in Dzytlava. By the way, the best teacher of the year received 1 million 400 thousand roubles and a Zhiguli for her victory. But she has not registered the car in the driving inspectorate yet.
Inesa Zubrylina: “I am still waiting for the prize - the presidential car. I have to pay taxes and I am waiting for the document indicating that I am exempt from this tax. So I cannot register the car at the moment”.
The best teacher is very sad about the lack of respect for her profession.

Inesa Zubrylina: “Children keep asking me: “You were a good pupil, why are you a teacher?” The work time could be increased up to 20 hours and then the payment would increase too. However, it is only an idea now”.

The amount of work Alena Tsilyupa, a teacher of biology working in Krychau school #3, has to do is almost the same as her colleague’s. Optional classes, the duties of a form-master, responsibility for the school plot and work in the trade union. And she gets 1.5 million roubles a month for it all.

Alena Tsilyupa: “I am a teacher of higher category and my seniority is 15 years – so the salary cannot be bigger. I think that it is the maximum and I have reached it. There are some additional bonuses and it can be bigger then. However, the basic salary is 1.5 millions”.
She used to think about looking for another job. However, she changed her mind after the victory: she loves her profession. Furthermore, her 1.5 millions is not that bad in comparison with the average salary of 700-800 thousands.

Yury Areichyk who won the contest in 2009 is not a teacher of biology anymore. He is not the headmaster of Hantsavichy school #2 either – he has become the district trade union head. At the same time, his salary has decreased and he makes about 1.5 millions now.

He has confessed that his dream is to work at school again as an ordinary teacher of biology.
Inesa Zubrylina, teacher from Dzyatlava, has drawn Euroradio’s attention to the fact that the majority of the winners of the contest are district teachers. Minsk or regional pedagogues rarely win it. In her opinion, it happens because there are more opportunities to find another job in big cities. The best teachers prefer more lucrative jobs. And inhabitants of small villages simply have no choice.
