2011 can be announced a Year of language and culture in Belarus

The suggestions to announce 2011 as a Year of language and culture in Belarus have been prepared, replied the Deputy Minister of Culture Tadeusz Struzhetski to the appeal of the Belarusian Language Partnership. The reply is dated January 21.
The Chairman of the Belarusian Language Partnership Aleh Trusau directed the above-mentioned appeal to Aliaksandr Lukashenka's public office. At that moment Lukashenka was a presidential candidate. Mr. Trusau has said he is satisfied with Struzhetski's reply and expressed his hope that this year will indeed be announced a Year of language and culture, in an interview to BelaPAN.  Moreover, the 120th anniversary of the Belarusian poet Maxim Bahdanovich's birthday will be marked this year.

Aleh Trusau thinks that announcement of such a year would facilitate the Belarusian language's presence in all the spheres of life. According to the BLP Chairman, the main actions should be adoption of amendments to the Law "On Belarusian Language" in order to obtain real equality between the two state languages, and also adoption of a law or a governmental decree about rendering the state support to the Belarusian language.
