Pressball vs Olympic committee in accreditation row

Belarus's leading sports newspaper Pressball is ending an action against the decision of the National Olympic Committee to deny accreditation at the Olympic Games in Beijing. The National Olympic Committee took the decision on February 28. The newspaper was accused of "printing libelous stories which degrade the Olympic champions and undermine the business reputation of the National Olympic Committee".

Up to 100 famous Belarusian athletes have spoken out in support of the newspaper. However, the action is to be stopped. Uladzimir Berazhkou, the editor-in-chief of the newspaper, explained as follows:

"Over this period of time, 100 athletes have announced their backing and explained thei position. No argument was voiced in respond. I think that it makes no sense to continue the action in this situation".

However, Berazhkou does not lose hopes that the unjustified decision of the Olympic committee can be cancelled at any moment, even during the Games. He also admits that the government is investigating the case of corruption mentioned by the newspaper in its articles.
