People arrested for reading out Independence Declaration in Minsk
Special police troops detained 20 activists of a civil campaign “European Belarus” on the evening of July 27. The young people wanted to mark the 19th anniversary of adoption of the Declaration of Belarusian sovereignty. They were going to organize a flash mob near the monument to Yanka Kupala. Everyone took out declarations of Belarusian sovereignty and started reading them out. “Charter-97” notes that special police troops in plain clothes started detaining the activists several minutes later. The opposition members were made to get on buses and were delivered to Minsk Central District Department of the Interior.
Some of the detained were released immediately. Yauhen Afnahel, Pavel Yuhnevich, Maxim Vinyarski, Aleh Ladutska, Palina Kuryanovich, Marina Zaleuskaya and Ihar Mihailau spent three hours in the police office. No protocols were drawn against them.
Yauhen Afnahel informed that the policemen who detained the opposition members asked them what the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution was.
