Paznyak's statement misinterpreted, associate says

Yuras Belenki, deputy chairman of the Conservative Christian Party (CCP), said that CCP exiled leader Zyanon Paznyak's December 21 statement about the establishment of a new movement has been misinterpreted.

Paznyak did not mean to say that he intends to set up a new organization, Belenki said. "He meant a movement in Belarusian society, a process that is under way, and that this process may speed up and lead to developments that we experienced in the late 1980s and the early 1990s," Belenki told ERB.

Some online media outlets reported on Monday that in his written address to a recent meeting of the CCP Council, Paznyak said that his party would hold a convention in 2009 and then start preparing an "ideological and political ground” for a new popular movement.
