Parliament passes amnesty law

The House of Representatives of the Belarusian parliament today passed the legislation on amnesty. Under the law, up to 3500 convicts can see their sentences cleared, including 1600 inmates, serving their prison terms.

At the same time, amnesty does not cover thos who were amnestied or pardoned before or repeatedly committed a pre-mediated crime. In addition, those who violated order while serving their term would not fall under amnesty, reports Interfax.

The European Radio for Belarus called the Vitsebsk-3 colony where former presidential candidate Alexander Kozulin is serving his term to ask if he was eligible for this year's amnesty. A colony official said that he had no information yet abou the fate of Kozulin:

“We have not seen this law yet. We don't know anything. This issue will be studied by special commissions, special departments in accordance with the legal procedure.
