Over 20 bank card holders fall victims of fraud

Over 20 plastic bank card holders have been conned in Minsk, Babruysk and Zhlobin, writes Zvyazda newspaper. Aleh Slepchanka, an Interior Ministry spokesman, told the newspaper that the swindlers stole money from people, using the so called "Lebanese noose".

The "Lebanese noose", a thread with a metal frame, was used by the criminals to block the plastic cards inside ATM and to steal them afterwards. They would later get pin-codes for the stolen cards and withdraw all the money without a problem.

One of the criminals would line up behind a potential "client" in front of ATM and when the card, blocked by the Lebanese noose, would not be returned to the victim, the criminal would eagerly propose to enter the PIN-code once again.

The criminals would also leave their mobile phone numbers on ATM as if they were customer service numbers. Clearly, they would get PIN-codes of potential victims quite easily.

According to Aleh Slepchanka, these are the first cases of this kind registered in Belarus.

The police have already arrested four people associated with at least 23 cases of "plastic card" crimes.
