Opposition leader searched at border checkpoint

Opposition politician Anatol Lyabedzka was detained for approximately two hours at the Belarusian border on Wednesday morning when he was heading for Lithuania’s Vilnius, BelaPAN reported.

Lithuania’s parliament had invited the leader of the United Civic Party to visit Vilnius.

Belarusian border guards first said that there was something suspicious about Lyabedzka’s documents, then they asked him to fill in a declaration and then hand searched him.

Lyabedzka told BelaPAN that he had been examined at the Belarusian border for the first time over the last several months. “I earlier crossed the border without problems, they have arisen only today,” he noted.
