Opposition activist on hunger strike in Hrodna

Yury Istomin, the leader of the regional branch of the United Civil Party in Hrodna, and party activist Dzmitry Slutski, have announced a hunger strike in protest against the ruling by a local court which sentenced the two men to administrative arrest.

Four United Civil Party activists were detained yesterday in Hrodna and taken to a police station. Police charged them with minor hooliganism, saying they allegedly spoke dirty language and cursed in a public place.

Dzmitry Slutski, Ivan Roman and Viktar Sazonau were sentenced to 5 days of arrest. Yury Istomin will spend 7 days behind the bars.

The opposition-staged European March will take place on October 14 in the capital Minsk.
