Minsk court leaves Uralkali CEO in custody

Russia's Perm region governor Victor Basagin and Russian MP Igor Barinov were ready to bail out the arrested Uralkali CEO.
 

Minsk's Partizanski district court on Friday considered a complaint filed by Vladislav Baumgertner's lawyers regarding his restrain status and refused to release him on bail. The hearing was held behind the closed doors in the presence of the lawyers only. The lawyers said they would appeal today's court decision on September 9.

Uralkali CEO Vladislav Baumgertner was detained on August 26 at the Minsk international airport after the meeting with Prime Minister Mikhail Myasnikovich. The Investigatory Committee of Belarus stated that Uralkali CEO caused damage to the national interests of Belarus. Baumgertner is charged with power abuse. He faces up to 10 years of imprisonment with property confiscation. The Investigatory Committee said that the damage was estimated at $100 million. Baumgertner remains in custody in a KGB prison.
