Lithuania nuclear plant shut down due to malfunction

The Ignalina nuclear power plant in Lithuania was shut down last night due to an electrical malfunction, said the Lithuanian authorities. According to preliminary reports, the malfunction was caused by a short circuit which stopped the station's generator. Officials said the Ignalina nuclear power plant would be back in operation in three days.

Lithuania closed down one of the station's two reactors in order to join the European Union. The second Soviet-built reactor which was shut down by automatics yesterday is to be phased out by 2009, reports Interfax.

The Ignalina nuclear power plant is located at the bank of Lake Rych, 8 km off the Belarusian town of Braslau and 80 km off Ashmyany. The station was put in service in 1983.
