Latvia elects Raimonds Vejonis

Latvian MPs finally elected a new President on June 3. Defense Minister Raimonds Vejonis has won the election, rus.delfi.lv reports. He was proposed by the Union of the Greens and villagers.

The candidate had to get at least 51 votes out of 100 to be elected President. 55 MPs voted for Vejonis.

Vejonis will work as the Minister of Defense for one more month, Latvia PM Laimdota Straujuma announced on TV.

Vejonis was born in Pskov Oblast of Russia in 1966. He was the Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development in several governments. Raimonds Vejonis obtained a Masters degree in the University of Latvia.
