Killer-woman leaves behind two underage children to grow as orphans

A Belarus woman is sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing her newly-born baby son.

The Supreme Court in Belarus last week upheld the ruling by the Minsk Regional Court, which found the 30-year-old resident of the village of Trajanauka guilty of murder. Her two underage children – 2-year-old Vova and 11-year-old Alina – have been rescued from orphanage by their grand mother.

According to Dzina Siamionava, a specialist with the Belarus guardianship authority, the two siblings would definitely be sent to an orphanage if the grand mother did not step in.

“The grandmother did not approach us formally, so we were preparing the children for an orphanage. But, when we came to her, she immediately agreed to file a guardianship application. The grand mother is a decent positive woman; she works as a shop director. It is always better for children to live with their relatives. We try to prioritize guardianships instead of sending children to orphanages. It is the relatives who normally become guardians. They do not get paid for that. They only receive a small allowance from the government to keep the children,” Dzina Siamionava told the European Radio for Belarus.

The 30-year-old mother got behind bars in October last year. This woman, who was hiding her pregnancy from relatives and doctors, delivered a baby son without medical assistance right in the backyard of her private house. Forensic experts later detected that the boy was born healthy. The mother used a knife to stab her baby with a stab in the neck. She put the body into a plastic bag and concealed it under a rubbish pile.

The next morning, the woman’s condition deteriorated sharply, so she had to seek assistance in a hospital. There, she confessed to the crime. She said she decided to kill the baby, because she was not able to raise three children, while her partner would not provide for her.

According to the children’s grand mother Volga Enikava, the education officials proposed her to guard the children three days after the arrest of their mother. She said she did not hesitate a second with an affirmative respond. The grand mother lives together with her younger son.

“What else could I do? I could not allow these kids being scattered around orphanages. I could not do otherwise. Myself, I was raised in a big family. The boy who is now 1 year and 9 months has already started calling me as mother. The girl has been raised with us and used to go to our school,” the grandmother said.

According to statistics, imprisoned women, having underage children, rarely complete their term. Lawyer Mikhail Pastukhov says they are most often released by amnesty.

“If amnesty is announced, it covers in the first place the women that have children. Yet, it is unlikely that the amnesty would be applied to this particular woman. However, she could be possibly released after having served one third of the term on condition that she behaves well while in the correctional facility,” Pastukhov told the European Radio for Belarus.

The other side of the story is whether she will have anything or anyone to return to. According to Mikhail Pastukhov, if she fails to compensate the government for financial assistance to her children, all her property would be expropriated and sold out. Dzina Siamionava from the guardianship authority says they are most likely to seek the deprivation of parental rights from this woman in court.
