Ivashkevich: No tents; we'll speak out our position and walk home on election day

Alexander Lukashenka says the opposition in Belarus is preparing to put up tents on October Square on September 28. Popular Front deputy chairman Viktar Ivashkevich insists that after "demonstrating our position", action participants will walk home as there are no plans to stage street protests.  "The polls have not yet started, and the opposition is threatening with a boycott and preparing tents to stage protests when polling stations are not yet closed", Lukashenka said. He promised that no disturbances would take place. However, nobody seems to plan them.

Viktar Ivashkevich said in an interview with the European Radio for Belarus that opposition leaders do not plan to stage any tent camp on October Square, because this action makes no sense in the current conditions. The main thing is to demonstrate in front of both the local and foreign journalists the stance of the opposition, according to Ivashkevich.

Viktar Ivashkevich: "We will demonstrate our position, given there will be a lot of journalists on that day. The opposition leaders will express their stance that will be disseminated in the media. We will call on people to get involved more actively in our struggle for new free elections. That will be it and we will walk home".

At the same time, Ivashkevich does not rule out that someone could bring tents on October Square:

"I don't know how many Belarusians have tents. But not all of them will pull a tent to October Square".

In fact, the opposition forces are already planning how to stage a street action on Rememberance Day, because it was this action in late 1980s that triggered the democratization process in Belarus.
