Georgian hijacker wanted to make money in Belarus

Komsomolskaya Pravda has interviewed Gela Sakhelashvili’s relatives and neighbours. The man was detained for a hijacking attempt of a Kutaisi – Minsk plane on June 10.

Gela has heart problems and his daughter has problems with her eyesight, relatives said. His mother-in-law is bed-ridden. And he needs $8000 for an operation on his wife. The Georgian flew to Minsk to make the money.

Sakhelashvili had marked his departure with friends before taking the plane. He boarded the plane drunk. It could be the reason for his unconsidered action, relatives said.

The Belarusian KGB is investigating the case. The unaccomplished hijacker may get up to 7 years in prison.
